For Kindle Unlimited Readers or Things that Make Me Say, Huh?

Here are a few new releases that leave me scratching my head. Not because of the topics necessarily, but because of the length or the way they are packaged. Okay maybe this first one is partly because the hero (?) is a Dinosaur named Dave. But it is also only 16 pages long.  I think you’d have to be a KU reader and getting this free. But, maybe not. I’m embarrassed to admit that I’m actually tempted to give this author my .99 out of pure curiosity. What do you think? Is a 16 page story worth a purchase? or does it have to be free to get your attention?  Any KU readers out there?

And then there are the “books” that have titles that seem stuffed with key words. Many are collections of shorts and many include unnamed  bonus stories. The whole presentation makes me nervous. Are these sellers more concerned with getting borrows than about actually entertaining the reader? Maybe I’m being a skeptic. Maybe these sellers are just trying to help people find the stories that will match their interests. Has anyone given these a read? Is there anything in them worth checking out?

    • I think they must be high if you check the lists on freebie days, and from the sheer numbers of these books. I admit that KU is my wheelhouse. That’s where I see the majority of my readers, but that number is just starting out for me, and I don’t use click bait. It’s frustrating to wonder if that’s what it takes.

  1. I don’t have KU but I fear it may become a dumping ground for the anything & the everything:) I do see an increase in the keywords use…I think the goal is to reach and wider audience through keyword marketing, like increasing blog traffic by using certain search words. It makes business sense, but I fear if a writer does too much of it readers will feel spammed. Marketing is important, but books aren’t widgets or whatnots. People have an emotional connection to reading and if you exploit it too much they’ll just quit reading your books,

    • Agreed! When I see such attention to the “techniques” used to market the book I tend to worry that not enough attention has been paid to the quality of the book. It makes me think they are playing the numbers game rather than trying to connect with a reader who will buy future books.

  2. I have to admit I hardly ever look at the Alien Romance Blah Blah Blah titles with 20 words. I figure if an author can’t choose an actual TITLE, then it won’t be worth my time. Most of those tend to be 50-80 pages, but I am increasingly seeing longer books jumping on the keyword bandwagon. Truthfully, I barely look at them (even with my Kindle Unlimited subscription).

    • Interesting! Thanks for weighing in on the keyword stuffed titles. When I see longer books (by page count) doing this I usually find that they are actually just collections of shorter stories. It feels like they don’t care about the stories they are just trying to fool readers into thinking they are getting something they’re not.

I should say again that I really don’t know what is going on with this. Just guessing.

  3. Charlee, great post this week. I’ll admit – I couldn’t resist checking out Mated for Life…to a Dinosaur. Once I read your post, I just had to read it. It was…um…interesting? I think. Kinda strange, but maybe no stranger than having sex with an alien, a really, really big alien. In fact, the author goes into detail about what positions would be best to accomodate the size differential. The girl decides that the sentient dinosaur with feathers is better than any human man she’d met, both in bed and out, and falls in love in a matter of a couple of hours. Definitely campy.

    • Brave move! This isn’t the first time I’ve seen stories with dinosaurs, but I haven’t been courageous enough to give one a try.

I usually try not to be derogatory toward anyone’s interests, kinks, or fantasies, but it’s just really hard to take a dinosaur lover seriously. 😉 At least it is delivering on what it is offering. And maybe the idea isn’t to take it seriously, rather to just have fun with it!

  4. I don’t know. The keyword titles bother me. I get the why of it, but I haven’t loved one yet. It’s an indicator IMO of an emphasis on marketing and not craft. My guilty pleasure funds are limited, so I usually won’t chance it.
