Science Fiction: Taking You To The Future
By Jessica E. Subject
Hello everyone! It’s such a pleasure to be back at Smart Girls Love Sci-Fi and Paranormal Romance. Thank you to Charlee for having me, and to you for visiting!
One of the things I love about reading, writing, and watching science fiction and science fiction romance is looking to the future, predicting and learning about the possibilities of what life might be like many years from now. Will we have hover vehicles and laser weapons? Will people be able to travel to Mars? Perhaps beyond our own galaxy? Will clones and artificial intelligence become a part of everyday life? Will we find a cure for cancer?
I have always been a big fan of the Star Trek franchise, which predicts a very enticing future with space travel as the norm. But there is a dark side to future technologies when not everything goes as planned, or when people cross moral boundaries. Take I, Robot and I Am Legend for example. (Yes, I’m on a Will Smith movie watching kick lately.) What happens when artificial intelligence becomes smarter than us? Or when the cure for cancer turns people into a feral night creature?
Yet, the future includes more than just technology. Society itself can change in so many ways. Will we become a utopian society where everyone is accepted and at peace? Or, will social classes become more defined and enforced like in The Hunger Games? Will the world one day accept same-sex and interracial relationships? Will we finally make contact with extraterrestrials and see inter-species relationships?
It is my hope that the human race becomes more accepting of those who are different. We’ve come a long way, but we still have so far to go. And with commercial space flight not too far away, I’d really like to see astronauts travel even farther into space.
Tell me: What type of future would you like to see?

Thank you so much for having me on the blog today! 🙂 I look forward to hearing everyone’s visions of the future.
Always great to have you here!
I hope the human race will be more accepting.. I would love to see same sex marriage, polyamory , and inter species relationships. I think everyone should be free to love who they love. I swear I was born in the wrong century. I’ve always loved Sci-Fi, I’ve always wanted to travel in space, and visit new worlds. I hope that those opportunities will be readily available in the future. Great post, Jessica!
I feel the exact same way, Tawania! I’d love to see the same things, but I fear affordable space travel will not be possible in my lifetime. I can dream though, and write stories about it. *grins*
Love is love, doesn’t matter with whom. All that matters is that its real
So true, Liza! Now, if the rest of the world could see it that way.
Like everyone else, I would love a future that is far more accepting: Where people of different races, genders, identities, ethnic and cultural backgrounds etc etc etc are valued and not just tolerated. I would like to see more diverse characters reflected in SFR as it grows as a genre.
I also hold out hope that are future can be better and brighter and we are not doomed to post-apocalyptic dystopias.
I’m so glad I’m not the only one who shares that vision. Thank you, RK! I do enjoy reading and writing dystopian stories, knowing that even in the worst situations, people will survive and prosper, but I would never one to live in those worlds.
