SGLSF: What books had an influence on you growing up?

KARA: Anne McCaffrey’s Pern series, Robin McKinley’s “Hero and the Crown,” Nancy Drew, and of course my mom’s romances that I found lying around.

SGLSF: What attracts you to the romance genre, particularly SF/futuristic romance?
KARA: Romance is a genre that is about turning weakness into strength. You have to let your guard down in order to truly care for someone, and let that person become a weakness by which others can threaten you with. And yet at the same time, it is that love that gives us strength in the face of adversity and impossible odds. Combine that with adventure and space travel and you’ve got a winning combination for a great story (I specialize in space opera, not so much realistic SF).

SGLSF: What do you feel makes an engaging hero/heroine?
KARA: I love heroes that are dominating, but smart enough to step back and let a heroine shine when it comes down to the wire, even if her life is in jeopardy. That to me, is true love, that absolute confidence in your partner’s abilities, regardless of whether she does or does not.

SGLSF:  Where is your favorite place to write and why? 
KARA: I live in a tiny NYC apartment so I get out to the coffee shops when I can.

SGLSF: What would be your dream spaceship?
KARA: I’d like to have an organic living spaceship. I always thought those were kind of cool.
SGLSF: If you could time travel, where would you go?
KARA: Some time in the future, when people are colonizing other planets. It would be fascinating to see what comes next!
