Author Interview: Lynda K. Scott

Lynda K. Scott is the author of HEARTSTONE and ALTERED DESTINY. She also contributes to the YA anthology MAGICAL MAYHEM. She is a member of RWA and runs the very fine blog STAR CROSSED ROMANCE. And she has a new science fiction romance, RIDING THE ODDS, due to be released on Feb. 2!

RK: Could you tell us a bit about your path to publication?

LYNDA: I’d been writing since I could pick up a pencil and space, space ships, aliens or magical creatures always seemed to star in my short fiction. Then one day I discovered that I could submit my stories to magazines. I studied the markets and started writing pieces appropriate for those magazines. I was did a happy dance every time I sold and I ate chocolate every time I got a rejection letter…which was perhaps not the best idea I ever had, lol. But I happened to meet a lovely bunch of ladies who were well established romance authors. They convinced me to try my hand at a novel length science fiction romance. I pished and poshed because, while I liked to read romance, I never pictured myself writing it even though, as they pointed out, there always seemed to be a romantic element in my work. So I gave it a shot and wrote HEARTSTONE. On a lark, I submitted it to the RWA Golden Heart contest where it shocked me by actually finaling. Thus my career as a novelist was born.

RK: What appeals to you in the genres of paranormal and fantasy?

LYNDA: The absolute freedom to stretch your imagination beyond the bounds. I love bringing creatures that never existed to life or populating a world with people whose culture is based on different attributes than ours. I always try to ground the ‘magic’ or ‘science’ in fact or extrapolated fact (ie a hypothesis) and the research to do that is another reason I love writing it.

RK: Do you have an established writing routine? Do you use an outline or do you wing it?

LYNDA: I heard an author once refer to herself as ‘flying into the mist’ when she writes. That’s what I do. I usually have an opening scene and an ending scene in mind but the area in between? Hidden by the mist. My writing is as much as adventure for me as it is for the reader

RK: What was the inspiration for your latest release?

LYNDA: I saw a woman with a small dragon tattoo that just kind of curled around her arm. It was great artwork but the tat’s eyes just brought it to life. And I thought…how neat would it be to have a living tattoo? That was when Zie in RIDING THE ODDS was born. Of course, she’s not really a tat, she’s a symbiote, but she’s got a darling personality that’s both imperious and sweet and reminds me of my alien kitten, Wookie.

RK: Could you tell us a bit about your upcoming books?

LYNDA: I’m working on a series for Entangled Publishing right now. The first book is RIDING THE ODDS — Spaceship captain Tara Rowan has a Rider—an organic symbiote—that enhances Tara’s physical abilities. But she can never risk anyone discovering her Rider’s true origins. Especially not the sexily dangerous stranger who appears out of nowhere. Trace Munroe is looking for a kidnapped princess, and the only way to find her is to blackmail Tara. Except that a blazing attraction to Tara is definitely complicating things…and if Trace follows his code of honor, it could destroy the woman he’s falling for.

RIDING THE ODDS will be available on Feb 2. I’m working on book 2 of the series with Tara’s friend, Christopher Drummond, aka Drummer, and his Rider Quen. Drummer will be hunting the villain who nearly killed Tara and Zie in the first book and will encounter a woman whose scars hide a terrible grief and a compassionate heart. And who  Quen announces is Drummer’s mate. His book will be titled RIDING THE STORM. I think everyone will love Drummer as much as I do. He’s loyal and honorable…but he’s also a bit of a rogue with a charming smile and a hint of a mischief in his eyes.

RK: If you were a supernatural creature, what creature would you choose to be?

LYNDA: I’ve always been drawn to unicorns. I think their combination of beauty and power and purity and compassion reflects some inner quality I’d like to have.

RK: If you were a superhero, what would be your superhero name and special power?

LYNDA: I actually created this person, oh, a hundred years ago, lol, Her name was Illyona (Il-lee-on-a) and her special power was the ability to shoot blazing energy from her finger tips. She was one of my first created science fiction characters.

I’ll be having a release party for RIDING THE ODDS along with another Entangled author, Jess Anastazi, and her new release but the details aren’t finalized yet. We’ll have an Amazon gift card for a grand prize. The winner to be selected by a random drawing. For more details and my own private release date prize, join my newsletter list. It’s free and easy.
