SciFi Fashion

One of my favorite book quotes from a non SFR or PNR book is from Janet Evanovich’s Seven Up.

“For the Better part of my childhood, my professional aspirations were simple—I wanted to be an intergalactic princess. I didn’t care much about ruling hordes of space people. Mostly I wanted to wear the cape and the sexy boots and carry a cool weapon.”

This quote tells you a lot about Stephanie Plum, the former fashion professional turned bounty hunter. I certainly understand where Stephanie was coming from. I wanted my own space boots and shiny jumpsuit at one time. One of the first SciFi women I remember wanting to be was Colonel Wilma Deering, played by Erin Gray, in Buck Rogers in the 25th century.

Like Wilma, most of the SciFi girls I remember where military women rather than princesses, but Star Wars did give us Leia and her mother Padme, two of the most creative dressers in the genre.

Lei started a tradition of the creative updo and Padme managed to take it to a whole new level.

Here are a few of my other favorite SciFi Fashonistas…

Lilu from the Fifth Element  – only Lilu could make a roll of tape look like high fashion.

The ladies of Logan’s Run – I actually had a dress similar to the shiny sheath dresses they wore, back in my younger days.

Diana of old V and Anna of new V – dressed to kill. One in an orange jumpsuit, the other in a gray power suit.

If you had to pick your fashions from SciFi, what would you choose?

Maybe something colorful and fun from Cleopatra 2525?

Or are you more the comfortable and conservative SGC or BSG officer type?

And how many of you will admit to owning (or having owned) a Star Fleet uniform at some point in your fan-span?
