If you caught my post from last week, you learned that the newly dead have a recommended reading list that includes several Sci Fi Romance titles. Today, I am here to tell you that ghosts are not the only supernatural beings that like to read Sci Fi Romance.
Demons are beings with talents that go beyond the abilities of humans. According to literature, the variety of demons and their capabilities is vast and fascinating. Some are inherently evil. But some are only thought of as evil because of their appearance or abilities, when in fact their true nature is no different from other sentient beings. Luckily, documentation on demons and their existence is available. Some of that documentation has been written by the demons themselves, and some has been written by human observers. The list of books addressing the nature of demons is quite long. No surprise, it also includes quite a few Sci Fi Romance titles.
I’ve spend some time scanning the demon literature and picked out a list of books that may appeal to Smart Girls readers. I’ve read some of them, but not all. As with demon-kind, the nature of the demons in these stories is quite varied. If you are human and want to learn more about demons, pick one or two of these as your introduction to the species. If you are a demon and are looking for some insight into your everyday existence, perhaps one of these books will be right for you.
A Demon’s Life Reading List
(Words in quotes were taken from Amazon book blurbs.)
The Demon’s Eye by Greta van der Rol
“When the frigate is attacked by a pirate fleet intent on capturing Krys, she faces impossible choices. If she hands herself over to the pirates, she will die a painful death. If she doesn’t, everyone will die.”
There are no actual demon’s in this short story. Just a metaphorical demon’s eye, there to lure a person to certain danger. It’s usage does give demons a bad name. The book was obviously written by a human. But as Sci Fi Romance goes, it has everything in only 51 pages. Heroine, hero, romance, villain, aliens, space ships, intrigue and adventure.
A Despair of Demons (Travelers, #1) by Cassy Campbell
“Liv is a cognitive neuroscientist and Traveler for the Department of Parallel and Otherdimensional Travel, a top-secret black-ops program run out of Area 51. In a parallel world she meets a mysterious Traveler named Elachai. He claims he’s running from demons, the obviously mythical denizens of a world so awful it’s called Hell. … A Despair of Demons is a sexy scifi with a paranormal twist and a dash of romance. It’s the first book of the Travelers series.”
Ice Demon (The Dark Victorian Penny Dreads, #1) by Elizabeth Watasin
Naturally, there should beat least one Steampunk story on the list.
“Experience paranormal detective mysteries with a Victorian female sleuth: A historical fantasy in a mechanical and supernatural London, follow the adventures of an uncanny female sleuth and her senior skull partner set in the same alternate world as Elizabeth Watasin’s Victorian supernatural mystery series, The Elle Black Penny Dreads.”
The Demon of Synar, The Demon Master’s Wife, The Demon’s Change (Forced to Serve, #1, 2 and 5) by Donna McDonald
“Coveting Malachi’s enormous power, Liam’s evil brother hunts his ship, wanting to capture the alien demon that Liam’s life mate unknowingly hosts. Putting Malachi inside Ania two years ago had been a desperate act to save her life when she almost died saving him. If only the demon hadn’t killed again, Ania would still be safely unaware of her fate. Now Liam has no choice but to tell Ania the truth and face the true wrath of the only female he’s ever loved.” (From Book 1)
The demon Malachi is a character in all the books of the Forced to Serve series (that I have read so far). Books 1, 2 and 5 specifically mention him in the title. He is a fascinating character that undergoes some essence changing experiences through out the series. If the author is not a demon, I would be surprised if she did not have at least one personal demon friend. The first book in the series is a freebie.
Demon Possession, Demon Slave, Demon Retribution, Demon Untamed (Shadow Quest, #1-4) by Kiersten Fay
“Analia is alone, and for all she knows, she’s the last of her kind. By chance Analia escapes her captors, and hides herself on the merchant ship Marada, planning to get off at the very next stop. …When Analia is found by the captain of the Marada, she must adapt to her new role on the ship, and try to control her newly awakened desire for the brutal and devastatingly erotic demon.” (From Book 1)
The demons in the Shadow Quest are a family with horns. Their homeworld has been scorched by the Kayadon and now they are making their way through the universe as the owners the merchant ship Marada. Sebastion, Calic and Sonya stole the ship 600 years ago and they have made it their home. I may be way off base here, but the author’s knowledge of everyday demon life leads me to believe she may be one of them. Of course, she is not going to announce it. Note how she has cleverly changed her last name to make you think her heritage is of a completely different non-human species.
Demons’ Captive (Demons and Dragons, #1) by Evanne Lorraine
“One dangerous warrior woman plus two rogue demon males equals a love to threaten an empire.”
Bitten by Romance’s Tour of the Universe featured Ms. Lorraine, so you might have seen this Paranormal Sci Fi Romance recently. A do or die mission on a mining planet brings an elite warrior woman in contact with two demons who smell like…chocolate. Okay, I know the chocolate thing has been done a few times, but it works!
The SFR portion of the Demon’s Life reading list presents a variety of angles on the subject of demons. From what I have learned in my study, demon races in the universe are many and quite diverse. I suspect these books only represent the tip of the demon iceberg when it comes to understanding this fascinating species. If you are interested in demonology, maybe you can find something from this list to enhance your studies.
NOTE: These books exist and I have read a few of them. But other than that, this post is full of conjecture and ‘facts’ that are made up.
